McLaren Dominates Qualifying for the Abu Dhabi GP: Constructors' Battle Heats Up!
And here we go, it is the last race of the 2024 F1 season and we are now back at Abu Dhabi for the final showdown where we have 3 battles on our hand.
We will see that battle for constructors where Ferrari are 21points behind McLaren and will need a blinder of a race in order to win this championship while McLaren need to just make sure to have a good race and get some good points. While we have the battle for the drivers constructors where we see a battle for 2nd place as we see Charles Leclerc only 8 points behind Lando Norris. The other battle is for 6th place in the constructors as we see Haas only 5 points behind Alpine as the Haas cars are really coming into it in the closing races so will be one to keep an eye on as well on Sunday.
The other big news is that Esteban Ocon will not be driving his last race for Alpine as they will be replacing him with Jack Doohan for the weekend. This was not planned and Ocon also posted a tweet on X stating this wasn’t how he wanted to say goodbye to the team.
In FP1 we start by looking at loads of rookies taking part of the session as part of the teams obligation to run rookies in their cars. We see Ryo Hirakawa replacing Oscar Piastri at McLaren, Isak Hadjar replacing Max Verstappen at Red Bull, Felipe Drugovich replacing Lance Stroll at Aston Martin, Ayumu Iwasa replacing Yuki Tsunoda at VCARB, Luke Browning replacing Alex Albon at Williams and Arthur Leclerc replacing Carlos Sainz at Ferrari which makes it the first time in the history of F1 where we will see brothers driving for the same team in an F1 session.
Hadjar complains about the wheel clearance is bad which really meant that his hands are hitting his legs when steering as we cut to a shot of him spinning at Turn 5 in FP1 and this could be due to a bad seat fitment or something similar which is not something the team can really do about this. At the start of FP1 we see Charles Leclerc not coming out as he has battery issues and after 15 minutes he is still not out on track and his brother was the only Leclerc on track. With 30 minutes left on the clock we do see both brothers out on track and this must have been a very special moment for the both of them as I’m sure it is a dream of any brother to drive alongside his brother in F1.
Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris being noted for impeding as we do see Hamilton on the apex on the last corner when Norris was coming fast from behind and found the Mercedes of Hamilton in his way, this was to be investigated after the session, and nothing came out of this in the end. George Russell was not happy with his brakes similar to Qatar as he said he is not getting the same deceleration he usually gets here. We see Hadjar getting annoyed twice at Browning as he found his Williams in his way a couple of times in the session and in the end, Browning got a Black and White Flag for this as he was not abiding by the Race Director rules.
Towards the end we hear Fernando Alonso on the radio saying that this was the worst car ever and the worst traffic management ever and that next time he will manage the traffic himself, this was due to the team sending him out on the outlap in traffic and not gave him the best chance to get a fast lap. At the end of the session we see Charles Leclerc top the leaderboard followed by Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton. Arthur Leclerc finished the session in 18th place 1.8 seconds off his brothers time and on the in laps we see the brothers driving side by side showing each other the respect. Unfortunately for Ferrari and their constructor battle, we hear that Leclerc will be getting a 10 place Grid Penalty on Sunday as he took a new battery pack, and it is an extra one from the allowed pool. Talking about Grid penalties, we get news that at Williams, both Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto will be getting a 5 place grid penalty as both take a new gearbox for the race weekend which again is out of the allowed pool.
In FP2 we see all our normal drivers back in their cars as the rookies make way once more and the drivers who didn’t drive in FP1 will be keen to get some learnings from the track. Immediately we hear Russell complain that there is loads of vibrations in the steering rack and also complained about the cockpit being quite toasty a bit later on. Max was also complaining on the radio in FP2 as he had no power and the car seems to be understeering was also being an issue for the 4 time world champion as he is a second off the pace 15 minutes in, later the team ask him how the car is and he responds that it wasn’t good and said that the front axle wasn’t working.
With 35 minutes left we see Colapinto go wide into Turn 5 on a fast lap and went over the kerb quite aggressively and a bit of carbon seem to have come off, this was unfortunately session ending for Colapinto as the team was inspecting the car as he got back to the pits. His teammate with 15 minutes left on the session was seen driving slowly as he seems to have had a wonky wheel, but after a quick visit to the pits, he was back out on track, so it seemed like it wasn’t a structural issue for him. And in the end, we see Lando Norris taking the top spot in FP2 followed by Oscar Piastri and Nico Hulkenberg, Ferrari were 4th and 6th and so far, it seems like it is advantage McLaren for the constructors.
Norris on Pole, Ferrari on the Back Foot in a Decisive Abu Dhabi Showdown
Coming into now the last practice session of the 2024 season, it will be the last time that the drivers can amend to perfect their setup ahead of qualifying and the race. Immediately we hear Alonso say that he things it will be a good day and I am not sure if the team had asked him to be a bit more positive on the radio given the last few times we heard him complain, or if he genuinely felt that the car is feeling good that day.
It was pretty much business as usual for everyone and there weren’t many notable events but 28 minutes in, we hear Russell say that the car feels slow as we see him out in last place out of all the timed laps we had so far. Zhou Guanyu was impeded by Sergio Perez on his push lap, but this seemed to have gone under the radar while we see a worrying scene out of Sainz’s Ferrari as we see some white smoke on one of his push laps. This was obviously concerning as with Leclerc already on a penalty, this could be the end of the championship battle if both cars are taking grid penalties. However this seemed to be a false alarm as Sainz was seen after doing push laps again and it was seen that it could be a clearance issue as Leclerc was also having the same smoke coming out and it was only a certain part of the track.
Verstappen in the closing minutes is once again heard saying that his brakes on the front axle are not working and that he thinks that the brakes are glazed however still managed 3rd quickest at the time, but by the end we see Oscar Piastri go fastest, followed by Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton go top 3 in FP3. Ferrari really off the pace at 5th and 9th ahead of qualifying.
Onto Qualifying and to start with we see Aston Martin send Alonso on Hards to take the set through a heat cycle as they usually do for the race. Perez gets his first push lap deleted for going over track limits into Turn 1 which is not good as Perez will most likely have to get another of soft tyres on, and similar to Perez, Colapinto also had his time deleted for Turn 1 track limits as well. Kevin Magnussen after his first run in Q1 we see him go 3rd fastest ahead of both McLaren’s as Sainz is quickest so far with Verstappen close in 2nd place. In the elimination zone it is very tight as it is only 0.032 seconds from 18th to 15th as Perez and Colapinto don’t have a time at all due to track limits however Perez’s time has been reinstated but he had already gone out to do his 2nd lap, Perez was not happy at all that the team didn’t properly check here as this way they ended up wasting an extra set of softs. In the end we see Alex Albon, Zhou Guanyu, Lewis Hamilton, Franco Colapinto and Jack Doohan eliminated as Hamilton says he messed it up big time there. This is Hamilton’s lowest ever start for him in Abu Dhabi, but it seemed he picked up a bollard on his lap as Magnussen hits the bollard on one of the last corners and then Hamilton picks it up in his car which would have messed up his aero dynamics.
Leclerc in Q2 nearly goes in the barriers on Turn 14 as he had to aggressively correct his steering and nearly goes in the barriers. With 5 mins left we see Max out of the car and seems to have given up on Q2 as he is fastest here after the first runs, but it is not something we often see as he will have to get back in for Q3 if he is through. Leclerc goes quickest on the 2nd run in Q2, but his lap time got deleted for track limits at Turn 1. At the end of Q2 we end up losing Yuki Tsunoda, Liam Lawson, Lance Stroll, Charles Leclerc and Kevin Magnussen and this is super bad news to Leclerc as this means he will start in 19th minus any Williams penalties. Valtteri Bottas however manages to make it to Q3 for the first time this season which is mighty impressive.
In Q3 we see Verstappen nearly completely lose the car coming out the last corner and has a massive slide but still manages to go quickest and match his time in Q2, that would have gone way faster if it wasn’t for the slide. Piastri goes 2nd fastest on used softs but loses the time for Turn 1 limits. After the first runs we see Max Verstappen on provisional pole followed by Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz, Nico Hulkenberg, Pierre Gasly, Fernando Alonso, Sergio Perez, George Russell, Oscar Piastri and Valtteri Bottas as Bottas and Piastri had no time, however Piastri’s time was reinstated and promotes him to 3rd fastest on the first run.
After the final runs we see Hulkenberg on provisional pole as he goes fastest after his second push lap, Piastri immediately takes this off Hulkenberg and Norris now takes provisional pole as he makes it round. And in the end the order is Lando Norris on Pole followed by Oscar Piastri, Carlos Sainz, Nico Hulkenberg, Max Verstappen, Pierre Gasly, George Russell, Fernando Alonso, Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez will form the Top 10 for tomorrow. McLaren really did their job securing a 1-2 start ahead of the race tomorrow especially for their fight with Ferrari for the constructors and Lando got pole when he is also in a battle with Leclerc for 2nd place in the drivers championship. Nico Hulkenberg was under investigation after qualifying as he overtook in the pit exit road which was against race director instructions and he got a 3 place grid penalty for this which dropped him to P7 from P4 tomorrow.
Who do you think will come out on top in the race? Will Ferrari manage to bring it back and challenge for the constructors championship? I think it is a big ask and a lot has to go their way for them to be crowned champions. Tune in tomorrow to find out.
