Mexico GP 2024: Sainz Seizes Pole as Verstappen Faces Challenges in High-Altitude Duel
We’re back for the 2nd week of the last triple header and this time round we are back to Mexico for Round 20 of the 2024 season for the Mexico GP. This track is quite high in altitude so we will see a Monaco spec rear wings, but the cars will get Monza level downforce due to the thinner air.
This weekend we see Williams having a special livery brought over as a tribute to their old Williams cars with a few drivers have special helmet design for Mexico, the one to talk about the most is Fernando Alonso who will be celebrating his 400th Race start in his F1 career which is quite remarkable from the Spaniard that he is still driving at this level of racing. In his career so far, Alonso has raced against 118 of 782 F1 racing drivers we have had so far.
In Mexico we will see a 90 minute FP2 as there will be Pirelli tyre tests for the 2025 tyres while in FP1 we will see some rookies run in the cars to get some time on track as per the regulations.
So rookies running in FP1 will be Andrea Kimi Antonelli who will be driving in the Mercedes instead of Lewis Hamilton, Oliver Bearman driving in the Ferrari instead of Charles Leclerc, Patricio O’Ward driving in the McLaren instead of Lando Norris, Felipe Drugovich driving in the Aston Martin instead of Fernando Alonso and Robert Shwartzman driving in the Sauber instead of Zhou Guanyu.
Looking now into the action, we immediately see a Red Flag come out 5 minutes into the session as there was a piece of debris on the pit straight which we later find out it came off Max Verstappen’s car as while it was under Red Flag conditions we see the mechanics from Red Bull trying to glue some stuff to the floor. The session quickly cleared back to green after one of the Marshalls ran on track to pick up the Carbon Fibre off the track and everyone got going again with their programs.
We were promptly interrupted again with 37 minutes left on the clock as we get another Red Flag, this time a bit more serious as we cut to a shot of Alex Albon in the barriers near Turn 10 with Bearman stopped on track at the same section of the track with a damaged car insinuating that the 2 touched. After a replay we see Albon on a push lap while Bearman was on a slow lap and coming into Turn 10 we see Albon lifting off a bit as he thought that Bearman was going to be in the way, as soon as he lifted off, the car snapped and Albon lost downforce and the rear snapped away, Albon tried to correct the slide but he wasn’t able to avoid contact with Bearman and his rear tyre hit the front tyre for Bearman and this sent Albon into a spin into the barriers. This was quite a hard hit for Albon and his Williams was in a pretty bad shape as all corners seem to be damaged which means that Williams mechanics are going to be working flat out trying to get that car ready for FP2. The stewards had noted this incident down and investigated this after the session but announced ahead of FP2 that no further investigation was needed.
Session resumed with 24 minutes left on the clock and nearly everyone was out on the softs to start getting some data on these tyres. Oscar Piastri at McLaren doesn’t seem to be having the best time so far with the setup of the car with 14 minutes left as the team were asking him if he wants to go for it again or keep doing continuous laps, at this stage he was nearly a full second off the leader sitting in 6th. Verstappen with 7 minutes left we hear Verstappen reporting no power in his engine as he is seen coming into the pits so the team can look into the car, and we don’t see Verstappen out again in FP1. At the end of the session we see George Russell topping the leaderboard followed by Carlos Sainz and Yuki Tsunoda.
As already mentioned for FP2 we will have all teams running next year Pirelli tyres and all teams will have different tyres from one another and they will be mandated to all have a performance run and a long run each so that Pirelli can gather the data to see how the degradation will work along with the performance of the tyres.
Williams are still working on Albon’s car at the start of FP2 and 13 mins into the session we hear James Vowles on the radio talking to the commentators saying that he is not confident that the car will be ready and Albon will most likely be missing out on FP2 as well as they had to change the engine and all 4 corners on the car. Someone else who was still having issues was Max Verstappen as 10 minutes in we hear him say that he is still having engine issues as he is saying he is hearing a weird noise coming from the engine. This was the same engine from FP1 as the team opted not to change engine and the team asks Max to pit.
13 minutes in we see another Red Flag as we cut into a shot of George Russell in the barriers at Turn 9 and this was another big impact we had so far. After a replay we see Russell on a push lap and took too much kerb at Turn 8 for a bit too long and lost traction and span right into the barriers with some speed. Luckily Russell was able to get out of the car on his own however he was quite winded from the crash as there was an electrical pole that was also bent with the crash even though there was tech pro barriers there. The session took 22 minutes to go back green due to all the repairs that needed to be done.
After the session went green once more, we hear Verstappen’s engineer come on the radio asking Max to put the car in Pit Recharge as they were seeing some issues again with the engine and Max is seen getting back to the pits as the team asked him to come in. Max comes out of the car which meant that he was not going to be back out in this session while the team look into the issue.
With an hour nearly over we hear Esteban Ocon come on the radio saying he Is smelling something burning and it’s not from his car, he says it is smelling something like burning brakes. Ocon was right as Guanyu comes on the radio saying his brakes were on fire in Sector 2 while later he also came on saying his engine was cutting out. At the end of the session we see Carlos Sainz on top of the leaderboard followed by Oscar Piastri and Yuki Tsunoda. Worth nothing that all these times were done on the test tyres for next year as only 3 drivers managed to get on the mediums towards the end of the session after they finished the mandatory testing for Pirelli. Williams weren’t able to get Albon’s car ready so didn’t get any running while Max Verstappen never came back out due to the engine issues.
Qualifying Drama and Ferrari’s Pole Take Center Stage at Mexico GP - Can Sainz Hold Off Verstappen and Norris?
Heading now into Saturday running and the last Free Practice of the weekend where we get news that Mercedes put a new chassis for George Russell after his crash in FP2 while Red Bull put a new engine in Max Verstappen’s car but this was an engine they used before and from the allowed pool so he won’t be taking any grid penalties for this. We also got news that the stewards rejected McLaren’s application for the right to appeal on the decision for Lando Norris’s 5 second penalty that dropped him to 4th from 3rd in the USA GP.
Max Verstappen complained saying there is no grip on the rear mainly at low speed corners 9 minutes into the session. Unfortunately for Red Bull and Max, the car didn’t seem to get better throughout the session as we hear Max with 4 minutes left in the session saying the car doesn’t work both front and rear while Sergio Perez also mentioned saying that there is no potential in the front to attack under braking as we see him go straight on in the Stadium section of the track.
20 minutes into the session we see Liam Lawson facing the wrong way at Turn 14 as he went on the kerb for too long and lost the rear. Nico Hulkenberg complains that the brakes feel numb today especially in Turns 1 and 4. The rest of the session was fairly standard where all drivers were just getting on with their programs but midway through the session we see Leclerc’s number 1 mechanic fall backwards and do a reverse roll before he got back on his feet as he was running backwards trying to wave Leclerc out of the pits. Leclerc was heard on the radio making a bit of fun of the mechanic after he was sure he was all ok. In FP3 we see Oscar Piastri topping the leaderboard followed by Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz.
Heading now into qualifying where we will determine the grid for tomorrow’s race where all drivers will battle out on track to get the fastest lap to get them on the front row to start the race. Ferraris go out on the mediums to start with in Q1. Ferrari weren’t the only ones as there was also the Mercedes and Piastri on the mediums to start with as the mediums seem to be performing quite well as Sainz is only 2 tenths off the pace from Norris who did the run on softs and was quickest after the first runs. Track ramping up drastically as we are seeing massive improvements from all over the grid in Q1. Oscar Piastri tried to get himself out of the bottom 5 with 5 mins left and got up outside the Top 10 however this was deleted so he was back in 19th. Russell was also told he was not safe as he was in 5th which shows how much the evolution of is helping to get faster lap times. At the end of Q1 we end up losing Franco Colapinto, Oscar Piastri, Sergio Perez, Esteban Ocon and Zhou Guanyu which was quite a shock for Piastri and Perez here especially for the crowd as their home hero is out in Q1 which will give him a massive job tomorrow to get a decent result.
In Q2 we hear Verstappen come on the radio saying that rear tyres were a bit tricky saying there is low grip there. After the first runs we see Kevin Magnussen, Lance Stroll, Nico Hulkenberg, Valtteri Bottas and Charles Leclerc in the bottom 5 while we see Lando Norris on top followed by Max Verstappen and George Russell. Red Flag with 10 seconds left on the clock in Q2 as we see Yuki Tsunoda in the barriers, on an out lap he seems to have lost the car on the last corner as he was winding up for his final push lap as he lost the rear and goes into the barriers. This meant qualifying is over and we end up losing Yuki Tsunoda, Liam Lawson, Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll and Valtteri Bottas.
Start of Q3 will be delayed so that they could clear out Tsunoda’s car while they also make repairs to the barriers. After a short delay Q3 gets underway and all the drivers start heading out on fresh softs where they will try to get their best time on the board early. Max Verstappen had his lap time deleted for track limits for Turns 2 as he cuts it too much. We see Carlos Sainz on provisional pole followed by Charles Leclerc and George Russell after first runs are covering the Top 3. On the last runs we see Carlos Sainz take pole followed by Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Kevin Magnussen, Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon and Nico Hulkenberg will form the Top 10.
Who do you think will come out on top tomorrow? Will Sainz be able to convert this to a win to help Ferrari get closer to the constructors championship? The battle for the drivers’ championship is still on as Norris will be starting from 3rd who will have a great slipstream to Turn 1. Tune in tomorrow to find out.
